Tour Overview

Nepal is home to more than 887 bird species that live in more than 37 Important Birds and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs), which are spread out in seven different types of vegetation (tropical, subtropical, lower-temperate, temperate, sub-alpine, alpine, & arctic). The Himalayan nation is known as one of the best places in the world to go on vacation to see birds.

Nepal's unique geography has made homes for many rare bird species, such as the Bengal florican, Cheer Pheasant, and Satyr Tragopan in the plain of Terai and the Himalayan griffon, Himalayan monal, Cheer pheasant, and Satyr Tragopan in the hidden valleys of the world's highest mountain peaks. Our birdwatching team has often seen native birds like the Great Slaty Woodpecker and the Spiny Babbler, which is the rarest and only bird that is only found in Nepal. Nepal's riverine plains are where birds from as far away as Siberia, the Indus Valley, Ladakh, and the Tibetan Himalayas spend the winter.

Nepal is a must-see, and this tour takes you to the country's three best wildlife reserves: Chitwan National Park, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, and the forested hills of the Kathmandu Valley. We'll start in Kathmandu, where we'll see some of the valley's cultural and architectural highlights and go birding. Then, we'll go to Chitwan National Park, where we'll look for Red-headed Trogon, Lesser Racquet-tailed Drongo, and White-tailed Rubythroat, among other sought-after species. The next place we'll go is the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, which is one of the best wetland areas in Asia. There, we'll look for birds like the Swamp Francolin and the Bengal Florican and animals like the wild Water Buffalo and the Nilgai. Before reluctantly starting our trip, we'll look around on foot and by boat.

01

Day 01: Arrival in Nepal

When you arrive at the Kathmandu airport, your guide will be waiting with your name sigh at the exit gate. Your guide will transfer you to the booked hotel and assist you with all hotel check-in procedures, after which you are free to relax. In addition, if time allowed, there will be a brief summary of the entire program.

02

Day 02: Bird Watching in Phulchowki Forest.

The next morning, we start birdwatching as we drive to the top of Phulchowki, the highest peak in the Kathmandu Valley at 2,740 meters. From there, on a clear day, we'll have amazing views of the Himalayas. We hope to see a lot of species, like the Red-flanked Bluetail, Fire-tailed Sunbird, White-collared and Grey-winged Blackbird, Long-tailed Minivet, White-tailed Nuthatch and Orange-bellied Leafbird, Cutia, Kalij Pheasant, Red-billed Leiothrix, Black-faced Leaf Warbler, and rosefinches, just to name a few of the 250+ birds.

We bring a lunch and spend the day here. We drive to the highest point we can get to and then walk downhill, enjoying the birds, forest, and view of nearby hills and snow-capped mountains in the distance. Even though this day is spent in the mountains, the walking is slow and relaxing.

03

Day 03: Travel to Bardia National Park.

Breakfast and we take a morning flight to Biratnagar. After arrival in Biratnagar we take an hour and a half to drive to Koshi Tappu. The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is in the Saptari and Sunsari districts of eastern Nepal. It is on the flood plains of the Sapta Koshi River. The Reserve was set up in 1976 and is 175 square kilometers in size. Most of the plants are tall Khar-pater grasslands, but there are also small areas of Khairsissoo, scrub forest, and deciduous mixed riverine forest.

The Reserve is an important place for many kinds of wildlife to live. Here, you can find the last wild buffaloes that are still alive (about 100). You can also find Hog Deer, Wild Boar, Spotted Deer, and Blue Bull here. There are 423 different kinds of birds here, including 20 kinds of ducks, 2 kinds of ibises, many storks, egrets, and herons, and the Swamp Partridge and Bengal Florican, both of which are on the verge of extinction. Every day, 183 different species of birds are seen. A visitor can see at least 100 different kinds of birds in one day.

04/06

Day 04 to 06: Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.

The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is north of a huge barrage and is made up of open water, marshes, lagoons, sandbanks, mudflats, and dry woodlands. This huge floodplain is one of the best places in Asia to watch birds. It is northeast of where the Sapt Koshi and Trijuga Khola rivers meet. Almost all of Nepal's wildfowl, waders, storks, ibises, herons, egrets, terns, and gulls live here. There are also a lot of land birds, like the Swamp Francolin, Red-necked Falcon, Striated Grassbird, Imperial Eagle, Pied Harrier, Vultures, etc.

This reserve is also the last place where wild Water Buffalo can live in Nepal. It is also the only place where rare Gangetic River Dolphins and other mammals can live. We go on foot and in a jeep to explore the reserve and the areas around it. Here is a great place to watch birds, and at night, we go back to our hosts' comfortable camp. There are many different kinds of waterbirds and songbirds to keep any birder busy in the campgrounds.

07

Day 07: Drive to Chitwan National Park.

Today, you will drive for 9–10 hours through beautiful scenery to get to Chitwan. You will have plenty of chances to see Ibisbills and White-Rumped Needletail Swifts along the way. When you get to Jungle Lodge, the Naturalist will be there to greet you and give you information about the tour.

Chitwan National Park is the most well-known national park in Nepal. It is home to 450 species of birds and many species of animals, such as 4 types of deer, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Wild Boar, and many more. This park is known for the rare One-horned Rhinoceros and the majestic Royal Bengal Tigers that live there. If you're very lucky, you might be able to see the Tigers. Chitwan is also home to a wide variety of plants and animals.

08/09

Day 08 - 09: Bird watching in Chitwan National Park.

Chitwan is a World Heritage Site made up of dry deciduous forest, tropical evergreen forest, and riverine grasslands. It is 932 square kilometers in size. We stay in places that are very comfortable and are right next to the Park. From where we'll be standing when we get there, we might even see a Greater One-horned Rhino crossing the grassland. Here, more bird species have been seen than anywhere else in Nepal (over 530), and we can expect to see about a third of them. Some of these birds are the Long-tailed Nightjar, the Indian Peafowl, the Great Barbet, the Red-billed Blue Magpie, and the Tickell's Red-breasted Blue Flycatcher.

The park has a similar variety of mammals, and we should see Wild Boar, Sambar, Muntjac, Spotted and Hog Deer, and Rhesus and Common Langur Monkeys. Tigers are definitely there, and we hope to see this big cat, whose paw prints can be seen all over the Park. Leopards, Sloth Bears, and Gaur, as well as Gharials and Mugger Crocodiles, can sometimes be seen. We'll go exploring on foot, on the back of an elephant, in dugout canoes, and in a jeep. Safari days are a lot of fun and a lot of fun!

10

Day 10: Fly back to Kathmandu, Visit Shivapuri National Park.

Breakfast and we take a short flight back to Kathmandu. After arrival at the airport in Kathmandu, we drive to Shivapuri National Park. The park is on the northern edge of Kathmandu and is named after Shivapuri Peak. It is one of the best places in Nepal and the Indian Subcontinent to watch birds. Its location between subtropical and temperate climates lets it be home to more than 117 species, including about 9 species that are threatened with extinction. Along with the birds, it is home to about 100 different kinds of butterflies, some of which are rare and threatened with extinction.

Win Win Win; Let Raj and team coordinate your journey

Personalized and professional: cannot recommend Raj and his team with Getaway Nepal Adventures highly enough. Raj provides tremendous value. He helped us plan a 12-day trip that covered exactly what we wanted to do. From advising about visas and meeting us at the airport, to staying in touch without ever being intrusive, he always made sure we were settled and had all our questions answered; he kept in close contact throughout, and even called our guides a couple times a day. His team of guides and drivers is excellent (shout out to Shyam and Kaaka!), and they’ve worked together for years. Raj was also able to make adjustments and accommodate last-minute changes to our itinerary seamlessly. Accommodations he chose were top-notch. The cooking class was great. Our trekking guide Shyam taught us how to play Tigers and Goats, treated us to special Nepalese treats in Pokhara, took us to special spots, and was always cheerful.

Raj, I think, is the face of new Nepal; he deserves support, and getting him to help you with your trip will make a journey to Nepal much richer. Whether you are planning a major trek into the mountains or a more sedate touring experience, or go on a retreat and then see the Chitwan park, or just want to buy rugs and thangkot art, his company has years of experience and a wide network of contacts. Five Stars plus.

We love Raj!

I went to Nepal with a team of clinicians and counseling students to provide training and continuing education to a group of social workers and professional counselors working in Nepal with trauma survivors. Raj was incredibly kind and helpful with securing us safe and affordable accommodations and providing us with fun and interesting cultural activities. He organized everything flawlessly and seemingly appeared out of nowhere every time we needed him. He was always early, eager to help, and wonderfully knowledgeable about the area attractions and activities.

When a friend and I stayed for an extra 2 days beyond the rest of our group’s departure, Raj recommended and arranged a trip to Bardia National Park for us. He got us a beautiful room in a wonderful resort which included all meals and 2 jeep safaris. The resort staff were all wonderful and it was clear that Raj had instructed them to treat us well! When we ran into an issue of a misplaced passport on our way home, Raj was on the phone with the embassy and already working to resolve the issue so we could get home. Luckily, we located the passport before we got back to Kathmandu and were able to get home without issue.

I can’t say enough good things about how kind, helpful, and knowledgeable Raj is! I need one of him in every country!

The best guided journey ever!

dear readers, getawayNepal and Raj made Nepal unforgettable for me. I found Getawaynepal through reviews and after one first email from Raj I immediately had confidence in him. During my journey this has only increased. Raj is a sweet, friendly man and always keeps his promises. Above all, he is very flexible, even if you want to change something in the itinerary. He always inquired if I was okay. I indicated what I wanted to do in Nepal and he responded very well to that. The Homestay in Panauti was very nice. The cooking class in momos, the yoga with the women of the village, the evening meeting with a Nepalese dance performance and the walks through the village with the daughter of the house, all equally fun and interesting. Then to the monastery in Namobuddha where I stayed for 6 days. Beautiful surroundings, eating and praying with the monks, and a whole experience. The tours in Kathmandu and Bhaktapur with the many historical sites were impressive, hotels were good.

Thank you Raj for your good guidance in every way.
